Seriously, if this disc doesn't get you up off your butt, you might want to check for a pulse. The disc is just about evenly split between Buckwheat originals, traditional tunes arranged by Buckwheat and covers of more contemporary tunes. The music is so full of life and energy and when you're on the road, you tend to sit around and work too much. The opening track "Zydeco Boogaloo" gets the party started off right and pretty soon my toe is tapping and the beat has before long worked its way up to my spine.
Even the 8 minute version of "Hey Joe" works well. The mix works to excellent effect.Standout tunes include: "Zydeco Boogaloo", "Lache Pas La Patate", "Ma 'Tit Fille", "Hot Tamale Baby", "Make A Change", "What You Gonna Do", "Midnight Special" and "Trouble". I love to listen to the whole disc. This is great stuff lovingly compiled. Eric Clapton plays along on "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad", a tune he co-wrote with Bobby Whitlock and this version is really good, as is the cover of the Rolling Stone's "Beast Of Burden". I used to do a lot of business in the south and always was willing to go out of my way to see Buckwheat Zydeco, Clifton Chenier and other Cajun and Zydeco bands.
This is not to say that the remaining tracks aren't good. Buy this and before long, you'll be picking up the individual albums these tunes were culled from. Dancing in a hot sweaty New Orleans bar is the right kind of cure for jet lag, I'll tell you that. This disc is an excellent compilation of Stanley Dural's (aka Buckwheat Zydeco) work. After that, it's all she wrote and I'll be hoppin' around like a fool for the next hour.
a great disc to play at a BBQ. this is good stuff. MAGICAL. and hey, covers of hey joe and the midnight special are magical. good party music. very jumpin' and wild.
This is my favorite Buckwheat album. I also like the fact that it has traditional Zydeco blues selections, cover songs from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, and newer upbeat originals. I wish it had "Hard to Stop" from the Trouble album, but that is the only thing lacking. I have a number of Buckwheat albums, and have seen him live at the NJ Crawfish Festival several times. This album captures alot of the material he often plays live.
MAKES GREAT BACKGROUND MUSIC FOR LIVE PARTIES. YOU GET A LITTLE BLUES, A LITTLE JAZZ, A LITTLE ROCK WITH THE ZYDECO TOUCH AND A GREAT BAND BACKING IT ALL UP.
This was a great CD to play as background music at my daughter's birthday party as well as to dance along with the catchy tunes. I grew up in New Orleans and live now in SW Florida with my 2 children. I am interested in exposing them to some of the wonderful cajun songs that I grew up hearing, even if they are NOT in New Orleans.
